What is the Science of Happiness & PERMA?

The foundations for human flourishing and the basis of The Science of Happiness are summed up in the acronym PERMA.

PERMA stands for Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment.

When you deliberately trigger positive emotions like joy or love, you will feel your mood improving. It may be as simple as playing your favourite song or looking at old holiday photos.

Equally, if you engage with an activity which you really enjoy, you will feel your stress melting away. Maybe you enjoy baking? Set some time aside to bake something yummy this weekend.

Top that up with spending time with people who make you feel good, get involved in a cause or project which gives you a sense of purpose (fundraising, volunteering etc.) and set yourself an exciting challenge (learn something new or obtain something that you’ve always desired).

You are now well on your way to creating a rich and fulfilled life.

To put it succinctly; to develop sustainable happiness, you do an act every day which sparks positivity to feel energised, focused on the future and less stressed.

At work, that would look like an unexpected gesture of appreciation, a random act of kindness or giving someone a piece of work which excites them.

As a result, you make your colleague feel amazing and you will feel great too.

Double-win.
